Which Japanese Denim Brands Ship Internationally? Official Stores vs Proxy Buying

Ask which Japanese denim brands ship abroad and the answer online is usually a shrug plus a link to a proxy service. That was roughly our own assumption before this article. It turns out to be wrong in both directions: more brands ship direct than the forums suggest, and for the two brands where we could match products, the brand’s own store was the more expensive of the routes we priced.

We checked all seven brands on their own websites on 6 September 2026, matched product codes between stores where the same item existed in both, and worked one purchase all the way through to the amount that leaves your card. Every figure below has a date attached, and the method is set out at the end.

One disclosure before the table. We earn no commission from any link in this article. No brand, retailer or proxy service paid for placement or saw this before publication. The prices are our own measurements from the dates given.

“Sold on Denimio” means Denimio stocked the brand when we looked. It does not mean no other retailer carries it.

What the price tags say

Brand official against Denimio

Both figures below are international prices, taken on 6 September 2026 and converted at 156.25 yen to the dollar, the market rate on 4 September 2026.

Samurai Jeans, 24 product codes, no exceptions. Take the H0710XX, a 15oz slim straight.

The official store asks 1.35 times Denimio’s price for the same jean, and the ratio held between 1.350 and 1.355 across all 24 codes we could match. That is the ratio between two price tags, not between two bills. Denimio’s $300 already includes US duty and Samurai’s $405 does not, so the gap in what you actually pay is wider — 1.57 times, worked through below.

Both prices in that example clear their own free-shipping threshold. A cheaper Samurai item under about $320 picks up ¥6,000 of shipping at the official store.

Momotaro Jeans, 33 matched codes. The official US price was higher in 32 of the 33. The median ratio was 1.17, and 28 of the 33 sat on exactly 1.1742. The exception was a denim jacket, code MXGJ1008, where the official store was 2.2% cheaper.

Here the two stores are genuinely comparable: Momotaro states that all customs and duties are included in the product price, Denimio ships DDP to the US, and both waive shipping over $150.

One caveat that changes the number for non-US readers. Momotaro runs a general international storefront and a separate US one, and the same product costs a flat 8.03% less on the international page. The 1.17 above is measured against the US page.

International price tags against Japanese ones

This is the part that surprised us most. Denimio’s dollar prices are not a light markup on the Japanese price.

Across 346 jeans on Denimio, the international price ran a median 23% to 34% above the same item’s Japanese price on Denimio, and the figure depended on the brand rather than the product.

For Samurai we checked that Denimio’s yen price equals the brand’s own tax-inclusive retail price, on ten items with no exceptions. For the other four brands it is Denimio’s yen listing, which we did not verify against brand retail.

The right-hand column is the yen-per-dollar rate you get by dividing the yen price by the dollar price. Against a market rate of 156.25, these sit between 117 and 127. Within a brand the figure barely moves: all 126 Oni Denim jeans landed on 118.2, as did all 181 Oni Denim items in the wider rerun described at the end. Across five brands there were effectively three rates in use, and they attach to the brand, not to the item.

We are not claiming to know how Denimio sets its prices. What we can say is that the implied rate clusters on one value per brand, which is not what a shifting market conversion looks like. A separate comparison, for reference only. Iron Heart is the one brand where the same company runs both a Japanese store and an overseas one, so the two price lists can be read side by side.

This is not a comparison of buying routes and not a total cost. Iron Heart Japan does not ship abroad at all, so nobody is choosing between these two prices. It is two price lists from one company.

Across 22 codes where the denim weight matched in both stores, the international price ran +54.6% to +128.5% above the Japanese one. Two things stop that being a clean number. We could not confirm from Iron Heart’s own site whether US duty is included in the dollar price. And the dollar price is not a conversion of the UK one: at 1.353 dollars to the pound, the market rate on 4 September 2026, £319 converts to $431.60, or $359.70 with UK VAT removed. Neither equals the $384 shown.

The one brand that explains it

Iron Heart Japan puts the reason on its own site, in English:

“IRON HEART products are sold at a uniform price worldwide, but only in Japan, they are priced lower due to being the original country. Therefore, IRON HEART Japan does not ship internationally. For shipments outside Japan, please use IRON HEART International in the UK.”

A brand stating that its home market is deliberately cheaper, and that this is why it will not ship to you, is unusually direct. It is also the only such statement we found. We are not extending it to the other six brands, whose pricing we can measure but whose reasons we cannot.

From price tag to what you actually pay

Price tags are where most comparisons stop, and they are the least reliable part, because the three routes handle duty differently.

Two facts settle most of the arithmetic.

The $800 duty-free allowance is gone, and it went earlier than most articles say. Executive Order 14324 suspended de minimis treatment for goods from every country from 12:01am eastern on 29 August 2025. US Customs and Border Protection later implemented an indefinite suspension by regulation in June and July 2026, and its own rule text says that step “does not, in practice, change the existing suspension.” The statutory repeal takes effect on 1 July 2027. If you read somewhere that duty on Japanese clothing arrived in 2026, the date is wrong.

Blue denim jeans are dutiable at 16.6%, and no additional tariff applies on top. The Harmonized Tariff Schedule puts men’s cotton blue denim trousers at 6203.42.45.11 and the women’s equivalent at 6204.62.80.11, both at 16.6%. That rate matters twice over. The two Japan-specific additional-duty provisions currently in Chapter 99 both work by lifting a rate up to a floor — 15% in one, 12.5% in the other — rather than by adding to it. At 16.6% jeans clear both floors, so neither adds anything. Bib overalls sit under a different code at 10.3% for men and 8.9% for women, so the same reasoning does not carry across the category.

Duty is charged on what you paid for the goods. International shipping and insurance are excluded from the dutiable value under 19 CFR 152.102(f), so postage does not get taxed.

Now the same jean, three ways. Samurai H0710XX, one pair, shipped to a US address, at 156.25 yen to the dollar, on the prices we read on 6 September 2026.

Read the conditions before the numbers. The proxy line is arithmetic, not a recommendation for this brand: Samurai states it cancels orders it identifies as forwarder or proxy purchases, so for this jean that route may never complete. We show it because the H0710XX is the one item with an official price, a Denimio price and a Japanese retail price all available. Only Denimio’s figure is settled at checkout. The other two arrive with duty outstanding, so their totals depend on the carrier presenting the bill correctly. The proxy figure also excludes domestic shipping from the brand to the warehouse, which we could not retrieve — that omission flatters the proxy route, not Denimio.

On this single purchase the official store costs about 1.57 times the cheapest route, and on paper the proxy lands within a few dollars of Denimio while being the least predictable of the three. One item, one destination, one weight assumption of 1.5kg. Change any of those and the ordering can change: proxies earn their keep on consolidated multi-item orders, and this is a single pair of jeans.

The currency matters as much as the route. At 156.25 yen to the dollar, Denimio’s price sits 34.0% above Japanese retail. At 140, the same dollar price is only 20.1% above it — the gap narrows by nearly 14 points without anything on either website changing.

If the size is wrong

Denim is bought long and hemmed, and that is where these policies get tested. Japan Blue is explicit that the garment must be unaltered; the others state unworn or unused without addressing hemming directly. Ask before you cut.

Momotaro is the outlier here, and it is the one place where paying the official price buys something concrete. If you are unsure of your size, a free exchange shipped from Japan is worth weighing against the roughly 15% you would save on the same Momotaro item at Denimio. That is the same 1.17 ratio read the other way round: 17% dearer at the official store is 15% saved at Denimio.

When a proxy is still the answer

Three cases, and only three.

The brand has no international store. Oni Denim, Pure Blue Japan and Studio D’Artisan. Denimio carries all three, so a proxy is the second option rather than the first. Our guide to choosing a Japan proxy service covers the comparison.

The item is secondhand, discontinued or out of stock. Denimio listed only two Pure Blue Japan items when we looked. Vintage and sold-out models live on the Japanese secondhand market, which is what buying from Mercari Japan is about.

You are somewhere the official store will not ship. Momotaro flags that US buyers may be asked for a Tax ID or SSN, has suspended Russia, and requires KYC for India. Samurai lists 20 countries it will not ship to at all: Belarus, Congo, Crimea, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Zimbabwe, Russia, Ukraine, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

And note which brands the third case does not include. Samurai states such orders will be cancelled, and Iron Heart Japan states they may be cancelled. Against those two brands a proxy is not a workaround; it is an order that may never arrive.

Brand by brand

Momotaro Jeans. International store at momotaro-jeans.com, in 22 locales, none of them Japanese. Free shipping over $150, duties included, EMS, FedEx or DHL, dispatch in two to three business days. Free size exchange. The domestic store is a separate site. The general international pages price 8.03% below the US ones.

Japan Blue Jeans. Two stores at the same registered address in Kojima, Kurashiki, Okayama, under Japan Blue Co., Ltd. The international one takes USD, AUD, CAD and HKD, free over $150, and states no import duties. The domestic one prices in yen. We did not compare their prices: the domestic site declines automated retrieval, and we did not work around that.

Iron Heart. Iron Heart Japan does not ship abroad and names Iron Heart International in the UK, company number GB8842914, as the route. That is an official channel, not a reseller. Iron Heart Japan also states that it does not accept purchases made through forwarding or proxy services, or on behalf of a third party, and that such orders may be cancelled without notice.

Samurai Jeans. English store at samurai-jeans.com/en. Overseas prices exclude Japanese consumption tax; US duty is billed to you separately. The forwarding rule is explicit: orders shipped to a third-party address such as a Japanese forwarding company, or judged to be placed from an overseas network, will be cancelled. On our figures Denimio was the cheaper route by a wide margin anyway.

Oni Denim. We found no official online store. Distribution runs through retailers — Hinoya, Denimio and Blue Beach Denim in Japan, Redcast Heritage and Blue Owl abroad.

A note on onidenim.org. The site ranking first for the brand calls itself the “ONI Denim Official Website.” Its domain was created on 22 June 2026, under three months before we looked. It publishes no company name, address, telephone number or email, shows no prices, and its wording is generic. We are not treating it as official and we are not linking to it. A newly registered site claiming to be a brand’s official store is worth checking the registration date on, whatever the brand.

Pure Blue Japan. The online store is pbj-denim.jp, with the brand site at purebluejapan.jp. It states in English that international shipping is not available and offers to point you to a distributor. Note that purebluejapan.com is an unrelated domain listed for sale.

Studio D’Artisan. The online store is dartisan-onlineshop.com, in Japanese only, shipping by Sagawa. It states that for orders sent to a forwarding service, no returns, exchanges or cancellations will be accepted. The brand site is dartisan.co.jp; studiodartisan.com is password-protected and dartisan.jp belongs to a barber shop in Kochi.

How we measured this

Everything here was read from the companies’ own sites on 6 September 2026, with the tariff and postal sources read on 7 September 2026. Currency conversions use 156.25 yen to the dollar and 1.353 dollars to the pound, both market rates on 4 September 2026.

The 346-jean figure is a floor, not a count. Samurai and Oni Denim rarely put “jeans” or “denim” in a product name, so the classifier leans on cut words such as straight and tapered, and 39 items with neither were dropped — at least one of them, a Samurai 1954 model, is certainly a pair of jeans. Running the whole 752 items produced identical medians and identical implied rates for every brand, which is what you would expect if the rate attaches to the brand rather than the product.

On the tax basis: Samurai’s Japanese figure of ¥34,980 is the tax-inclusive retail price, because that is what anyone buying in Japan actually pays, including a proxy buying on your behalf. Denimio’s yen prices match brand retail — we verified this against Samurai, where the official pre-tax price times 1.10 equalled Denimio’s yen price on all ten items checked. We did not repeat that check for the other four brands and do not assume it holds for them. Iron Heart’s Japanese prices are the tax-inclusive figures shown on screen.

What we did not establish. Whether US duty is included in Iron Heart’s international prices. Momotaro’s Japanese retail prices, and any comparison of Japan Blue’s two stores — both companies’ domestic sites decline automated retrieval and we did not circumvent that. Domestic shipping inside Japan for the proxy route. And we measured one specialist retailer, Denimio; other retailers carry these brands and we did not price them.

All prices were read from standard listing pages. Sale items, limited runs and stock levels move, and every company here can change a policy without notice.

FAQ

Which Japanese denim brands ship internationally? Four of the seven we checked. Momotaro Jeans, Japan Blue Jeans and Samurai Jeans each run their own English store, and Iron Heart directs international buyers to Iron Heart International in the UK. Samurai lists 20 countries it will not ship to, and Momotaro attaches conditions to several more. Oni Denim, Pure Blue Japan and Studio D’Artisan do not sell direct outside Japan.

Is it cheaper to buy from the brand or from a Japanese retailer? On what we measured, the retailer. Across 57 matched products, Denimio’s international price was lower in 56 of them. On one Samurai jean the official store asked $405 to Denimio’s $300, and only Denimio’s price included US duty. We measured one retailer, so this is a finding about Denimio rather than about specialist retailers generally.

Do I pay US duty on Japanese jeans? Yes. The $800 de minimis exemption was suspended for all countries on 29 August 2025 and is repealed by statute from 1 July 2027. Blue denim jeans are dutiable at 16.6%, and no additional tariff applies on top, because the Japan-specific provisions currently in force raise rates to a floor rather than adding to them. Some sellers include the duty: Denimio and Momotaro both ship duty-paid to the US, while Samurai’s official store does not.

Can I use a proxy service for brands that do not ship abroad? For Oni Denim, Pure Blue Japan and Studio D’Artisan, yes, though Studio D’Artisan refuses returns and exchanges on anything sent to a forwarder. For Samurai and Iron Heart Japan, no — Samurai states such orders will be cancelled, and Iron Heart Japan states forwarding and proxy purchases are not accepted and may be cancelled without notice.
